Description: Howard Stott Demolition Ltd were appointed as the demolition contractor by Willmott Dixon Construction to conduct asbestos abatement, soft strip and demolition the former Futurist theatre on the seafront of Scarborough. The building was of a traditional theatre construction and sat on a small footprint abutting the promenade with the works having to be undertaken with only a partial footpath closure to the front with access from other elevations not possible due to the gradient of site and 2 listed roads surrounding the site in the peak of the summer season.

The Project Complexities:

  • The theatre was located on the seafront with a very heavy footfall throughout the peak season.
  • Various pedestrian footpaths adjacent to the structure, including local highways and listed structures.
  • Notifiable asbestos removal to be undertaken following early engagement with the HSE.
  • Protection of watercourse’s from any demolition arisings throughout the period of the project.
  • Enabling demolition works required to allow the main works to commence including a full height demolition scaffold with protection screening for the public.
  • Particular consideration was given to noise, dust and vibration impacts to the local residents.
  • Strict environmental controls to mitigate dust nuisance.
  • Daily nesting birds checks for the protected Kitiwake species.
  • Full slab and foundation removal working alongside the structural survey to ensure slope stability of Blands Cliff including daily monitoring.
